Yoga teacher Ren Devlin’s life is forever changed after his practices with yoga and meditation awaken him to find what was once thought to be impossible in the physical world—possible. He performs what the world proclaims to be a ‘miracle’ in front of hundreds of shocked onlookers. Lauded as a spiritual healer, Ren is thrust into the limelight, along with his beloved life partner, Sean.
Amidst the chaos, Ren seeks answers through his dreams and even deeper states of meditation, during which he encounters his “council”—the gods and goddesses of the zodiac. Led by Saturn and Venus, Ren’s astrological council steers him down a path of spiritual healing to work through the kleshas—the five mental afflictions responsible for suffering. To find peace, Ren must face his childhood religion of Catholicism and its negative and repressive views towards the LGBTQ+ community and women, battle his own ego, and come to terms with his fear of death and being alone without Sean.
Awakening the Mystic is an imaginative combination of philosophies and ideologies across numerous religions and cultures, as well as an exploration of higher consciousness, the practice of yoga and meditation, and a journey to discover what love and healing really means.
“In 1539,” said Athena, "this Temple of Minerva was restored and rededicated to the Virgin Mary, Queen of Wisdom. The temple then took the name Santa Maria sopra Minerva, literally meaning Mary over Minerva.”
“The Pagan Goddess of Wisdom was tied directly to Christianity’s Queen of Wisdom,” Ren said. “Imagine that.”
“Yes, the ancients rightfully believed that wisdom was feminine. They called her Sophia, then Athena, then Minerva, and in yoga, you call her Shakti. More specifically, the piece of Shakti that represents wisdom in yoga is the Hindu goddess Saraswati. But no matter what name you call wisdom, they’re all feminine.”
